La climatologia si occupa dello studio del clima, ovvero delle condizioni medie del tempo meteorologico in un periodo di tempo abbastanza lungo, diciamo almeno 30 anni. Essa può essere scissa dalla meteorologia e considerata una branca a parte. Le sue origini si perdono nel tempo, il termine infatti deriva dal greco “klima”, che significa “inclinazione” e “logos” che significa "studio" [1].
Già i greci si erano resi conto che il mutare delle stagioni era legato alla diversa inclinazione con la quale i raggi solari giungevano sulla terra. Questa importante considerazione era stata resa possibile dall'osservazione dell'ombra degli oggetti: in una data località, un palo (primo esempio di “gnomone”) piantato verticalmente nel terreno, alla stessa ora del giorno, mostrava un'ombra di lunghezza diversa nei vari mesi dell'anno.

I greci, che erano abituati a regolamentare tutte le loro osservazioni, avevano così fissato un giorno in cui la lunghezza dell’ombra era minima e lo avevano chiamato solstizio d'estate, ed un giorno in cui era massima, detto solstizio d'inverno.
Si era poi notato che in località diverse, nello stesso giorno dell’anno e alla stessa ora, la lunghezza dell’ombra era diversa e ciò dipendeva unicamente dall’inclinazione dei raggi solari rispetto al suolo.
Le persone che avevano intrapreso viaggi verso sud ed avevano fatto delle misurazioni climatologiche con il metodo del palo, raccontavano di aver notato che, in quelle regioni lontane, le ombre erano più corte rispetto a quelle misurate nella madrepatria. In particolare, nella zona del basso Egitto, vi erano giorni in cui l’ombra del palo praticamente non esisteva. Inoltre in questi luoghi faceva generalmente più caldo che ad Atene. Adesso sappiamo che ciò è possibile nella zona di Assuan, che si trova ad una latitudine vicina al Tropico del Cancro.
Viceversa in Macedonia, la zona più a nord allora conosciuta, le ombre erano sempre più lunghe di quelle osservate ad Atene.
Gli studiosi greci avevano inoltre notato che, all’interno di una regione, le zone montagnose erano più fredde di quelle pianeggianti. Inoltre, salendo in quota, la variabilità del tempo era più accentuata ed il vento, in genere, soffiava con maggiore forza.
Questo fatto aveva messo in evidenza che i fattori che determinavano il clima di una regione erano principalmente due: l’inclinazione dell’ombra del palo, corrispondente a quella che adesso chiamiamo latitudine e l’altitudine, in quanto in montagna il tempo era più freddo e variabile che in pianura.
Ma la descrizione del clima non si limitava alla temperatura, i greci davano molta importanza anche alla quantità di precipitazioni ed alla loro distribuzione nei vari mesi dell’anno. Anche il vento era ritenuto importante, non solo per la navigazione che, a quel tempo, era alla base dei commerci, ma anche come caratteristica climatica di un luogo.
Partendo da questi principii, era stata fatta una primordiale classificazione climatica delle regioni allora conosciute. Procedendo da sud verso nord, erano state individuate sette regioni climatiche:
1. Clima di Meroè (Zona del Sudan)
2. Clima di Syène (Zona di Assuan)
3. Clima di Alessandria (Zona del delta del Nilo)
4. Clima di Rodi (Mediterraneo meridionale)
5. Clima di Roma (Mediterraneo settentrionale)
6. Clima del Ponto Eusino ( Zona del Mar Nero)
7. Clima di Boristene (Zona del Dnieper)

Notiamo tuttavia che nonostante l’ingenuità con cui è stata fatta, questa classificazione è perfettamente valida anche adesso. Al giorno d’oggi, infatti, gli elementi essenziali della climatologia sono rimasti gli stessi: la temperatura, le precipitazioni e il grado di ventosità. Tuttavia i parametri che caratterizzano ciascuna località, sono stati fissati in modo più scientifico.
